"Autoimmunity Wake-up Call: Sleep and Autoimmmunity"

The intricate relationship between sleep and autoimmunity has emerged as a pivotal area of research. Sleep patterns play a critical role in immune regulation. Recent studies have illuminated the impact of sleep duration, quality, and circadian rhythm disturbances on the delicate equilibrium of the immune system. Disruptions in these sleep parameters have been linked to alterations in immune cell function, cytokine production, and inflammatory responses, ultimately contributing to the pathogenesis and exacerbation of autoimmune conditions. Conversely, autoimmune disorders can reciprocally influence sleep patterns. Patients grappling with conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or multiple sclerosis often experience sleep disturbances as a secondary consequence of their autoimmune pathology. The interplay between inflammatory mediators, neuroendocrine factors, and the central nervous system intricately shapes the sleep-wake cycle, further highlighting the intricate relationship between autoimmunity and sleep. Understanding these interconnections is paramount for physicians managing patients with autoimmune disorders. Insights into the bidirectional influence between sleep and autoimmunity provide a foundation for developing targeted therapeutic interventions. Moreover, recognizing sleep-related symptoms in autoimmune patients can guide comprehensive treatment strategies aimed at improving both sleep quality and immune system function.

Bio: Heather Zwickey is recognized internationally as an expert and educator in the fields of integrative medicine, natural therapies and the immune system. "Low Dose Immunotherapy: A Novel Approach to Modulate Autoimmune Disease"

Lyme disease, streptococcus and multiple other microbes are known triggers for autoimmune reactions that can cause gastrointestinal, neurological and connective tissue disorders. Few therapies exist to modulate the immune response and downregulate overexpression toward autoimmunity. Low dose immunotherapy (LDI) is a novel new approach to accomplish that goal. The goals of this lecture are to educate practitioners about the immunological mechanisms behind low dose immunotherapy and how to implement it into clinical practice. LDI is a nosode therapy that evolved from low dose allergy therapy (LDA), developed by Dr. Len McKewen more than 50 years ago. Dr. Ty Vincent developed LDI almost 10 years ago after recognizing that the immune mechanisms involved with allergies was not dissimilar to how the immune system reacted to various microbes. Research shows that microbes, including Lyme, can upregulate Th2 pathways and produce antibodies that cross-react with several proteins on our cell surfaces causing inflammation and symptoms. LDI utilizes diluted inactivated organisms mixed with beta glucuronidase to help modulate Treg cells and downregulate Th2 activity. Patient symptoms often improve after using LDI. . Dr. Ingels will discuss the process of antigen selection, dosing schedules, side effects and patient management. He will also present case studies to demonstrate the clinical uses of LDI in practice.

Bio: Dr. Ingels is a respected leader in natural medicine with more than 30 years of experience in the healthcare field. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine and Medical Academy of Pediatric Special Needs. Dr. Ingels has been published extensively and is the author of “The Lyme Solution: A 5-Part Plan to Fight the Inflammatory Autoimmune Response and Beat Lyme Disease”, a comprehensive natural approach to treating Lyme disease. He has also been a Lyme and MS patient and has been able to reverse and control his symptoms using natural methods. Dr. Ingels specializes in Lyme disease, autism and chronic immune dysfunction. He uses diet, nutrients, herbs, homeopathy and immunotherapy to help his patients achieve better health.

"Exploring the Interplay Between Infectious Disease, Vaccines, and Autoimmunity"

Infectious diseases have long posed significant threats to human health and well-being, prompting the development and widespread implementation of vaccines as a primary preventive measure. While vaccines have been instrumental in reducing the burden of infectious diseases, their administration has raised concerns regarding potential links to autoimmunity. The intricate interplay between infectious agents and the immune response can sometimes lead to dysregulation, resulting in autoimmune reactions. Vaccines, designed to mimic natural infection and stimulate protective immunity, can occasionally trigger autoimmune responses through various mechanisms, including molecular mimicry, bystander activation, and epitope spreading. In this seminar, we’ll discuss how infectious disease and the strategies designed to reduce them, vaccines, may contribute to autoimmunity.

"Is Atopic Dermatitis an Autoimmune Disease?"

Numerous studies indicate that long-term dermal exposure to types of environmental toxins such as phthalates may endow an atopic predisposition in animals or humans. In addition, high expression of thymic lymphopoetin (TSLP) demonstrates that TSLP plays an important role in the aggravation effect. This result can help to provide effective prevention and treatment strategies against atopic diseases such as atopic dermatitis (AD) and asthma. In addition, we will examine the evidence that atopic dermatitis may have aspects of autoimmunity.

Bio: Dr. Traub’s father was a dermatologist, and this inspired him to become the leading expert in dermatology in the naturopathic profession. He has taught dermatology at most of the accredited naturopathic medical schools in North America and is the author of “Essentials of Dermatologic Diagnosis and Integrative Therapeutics.” He has been medical director of Lokahi Health Center in Kailua Kona, Hawaii for the past 49 years. He has been actively engaged in clinical research throughout most of his career. He is past president of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians and serves on the advisory boards of LearnSkin and Kamedis. He is board-certified in naturopathic oncology and serves as Treasurer of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians.
