"Fueling the Musculoskeletal System: The Movement-Mitochondria-Microbiome Axis in Chronic Pain and Recovery"

Presenter: Bethany Tennant, ND, CNS
Original Date: May 3, 2026

Musculoskeletal health is shaped by ongoing, bidirectional communication between muscle tissue, mitochondrial function, and the gut microbiome. This presentation explores three interconnected biological axes: muscle-to-mitochondria signaling, muscle-to-microbiome interactions, and microbiome-to-mitochondria regulation. Together, these systems influence energy production, inflammation, neuromuscular function, and overall musculoskeletal health. Attendees will review current and emerging research that links movement, microbial metabolites, and mitochondrial function to tissue integrity and recovery. Nutrition-based applications that support these biological systems will be discussed, with injury and recovery used as clinical contexts to illustrate their relevance in practice. This systems-based framework provides clinicians with a clearer understanding of musculoskeletal health and nutrition-informed care.
