The Overlap Between POTS, and Development of Coagulation Issues and Chronic Immune Activation

Dr. Guggenheim previously has helped use tease out the connections between autoimmunity, neurology, and post COVID and through this discussion, Dr. Guggenheim will continue to lead us through emerging research on “long haul COVID symptoms. This talk will look at infections with the sars-cov-2 virus, that can have pluripotent impacts on physiology and contribute to the development of ongoing significant symptomatology. This lecture will specifically focus on the impacts of viral infection on the autonomic nervous system, and evolving hypothesis regarding the impact on chronic immune activation via inappropriate mast cell degranulation, and changes in clotting. We will further cover diagnostic criteria of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, the most common form of post covid dysautonomia, and mast cell activation syndrome, as well as pharmaceutical and integrative therapeutics.

Alena Guggenheim is a 4th generation physician. She is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, at the School of Medicine at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, OR. She graduated from NUNM in 2007, then completed her residency in 2009 from the same institution. Dr. Guggenheim specializes in the care of children and adults with chronic pain and joint hypermobility disorders. She enjoys working with patients with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and associated complex symptoms.
