Dying in Oregon: Ethics, Homeopathy and Palliative Care

Presenter: Ian Luepker, ND, DHANP

Original Date: March 20, 2016

In 1945, most people died at home, in 1980 only 17% did. Modern medicine has increased life expectancy, but has quality of life kept pace? How and when do we make the decision to switch from “cure to care?” What are the ethical considerations around having end of life (EOL) conversations with our patients? What is homeopathy’s role in palliation? How should “incurable” cases be approached, and what remedies are often useful for the dying? The Death with Dignity Act, passed in 1997, makes Oregon a unique state. This presentation covers ethical considerations differentiating between physician assisted suicide and euthanasia.
