Presenter: Rachel Neuendorf, ND

Original Date: December 4, 2021

Mental health concerns have become increasingly prevalent on college campuses with up to 40% of students experiencing a significant mental health issue. This presentation will discuss the most common mental health concerns in college students including depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety, ADHD, substance abuse and eating disorders. An overview of the brain development of teenagers and young adults will be given to help understand why some behaviors and mental health conditions are more common in this population. I will go over options for screening and evaluating college students as well as special considerations for treating young adults with mental health concerns. We will also explore the various ways the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted mental health and how this population connects and seeks help. Finally, I will present on some pertinent topics for consideration including LGBTQ+, race/ethnicity, and social media.
