Compounding for the General Practitioner

Presenter: Natalie Gustafson, PharmD

Original Date: August 20, 2017

Compounding provides alternative options to treat many of the common conditions seen in general practice. This talk discusses everything from various pain conditions, such as arthritis, neuropathies, anal fissures and fibromyalgia, to dermatologic conditions. It also touches on hormone and thyroid replacement therapy options and women’s health. Frequently, patients with pain conditions are given opiates or other medications with addictive properties and significant adverse effects. There are many different alternatives, many designed to be local in action, that can help the general practitioner transition patients away from these medications. Combining healing agents together can be used in anal fissures, hemorrhoids, vaginitis and wounds. Many available products for different dermatologic conditions, like acne or psoriasis, can be harsh on the skin or also cause adverse effects. Compounding allows for incorporation of alternative or natural treatments.
