Next generation sequencing has led to both lower cost and expanded gene panel testing in the assessment of a woman's inherited predisposition for cancer. This lecture explores the current state of the art in testing for BRCA in breast cancer as well as expanded gene panel testing that provides risk assessment for numerous other cancers including uterine and colorectal cancer. Dr. Wheeler also explores the role of expanded gene panels and their advantages over single gene testing and discusses the larger responsibility of the laboratory in supporting primary care providers to take the lead in the prevention of cancer in women.
